Treatment for Cleft Palate

Treatment for cleft palate is a technically complicated surgery involving recreating a separation between the mouth and nose. It is sometimes a multi-stage process with several surgeries required to achieve the best outcome. Doctor Pegg has performed many successful cleft palate repairs, and really enjoys palate surgery.
It is extremely important to have this procedure performed by a veterinarian with experience treating cleft palates, as the greatest likelihood of a successful repair usually is on the first operation.
If previous operations have been attempted and have not been successful, many times, a positive outcome can still be obtained, but the more unsuccessful attempts that happen, the less likely this becomes.
Partial dehiscence of repair of cleft palate is very common, occurring in up to 50% of cases in published articles. Many times a small or major revision surgery is necessary to achieve full closure of the cleft. This is why in our practice a revision surgery is included in the cost of the initial repair if necessary.
